Policy, practice, performance: Parental Engagement

May 13th 2025

Parental engagement is more than a policy, it’s a powerful driver of student success. When embedded effectively in school culture, it can transform communication, trust, and outcomes. This blog explores how parental engagement, when approached through clear policy, consistent practice and measurable performance, makes a real impact.

Policy: Laying a foundation

Most schools already recognise the need for parental engagement. But awareness is not enough – your school should have a strong policy to ensure all staff and families are on the same page. Your policy should include:

  • Two-way communication (emails, texts, app messages)
  • Involvement of parents in learning
  • Clear and inclusive communication channels
  • Support for families with English as an additional language or limited tech access.

This framework sets the tone for inclusive, informed engagement.

Practice: Making it real

A policy can only work when it is exercised daily. You should ensure your communication is:

  • Timely and multi-channel
  • Clear, concise and translated where necessary
  • Focused not just on problems, but also on progress, attendance and behaviour.

As a result, school staff are aligned on expectations and families feel heard, valued and part of the school journey.

Performance: Seeing the results

Where engagement is embedded, schools see:

  • Better attendance and behaviour
  • Strong family-school trust
  • Higher parent satisfaction
  • Narrower attainment gaps

Parents become partners in learning and not just recipients of information, through boosting student outcomes.

Next steps: Turning insight into action

To move from policy to practice and ultimately performance, schools should begin by reviewing how communication currently works, checking whether messages are timely, inclusive and easy to understand. From there, it’s important to introduce tools that support translation, align communication with school data, and allow parents to respond where appropriate. Staff should be supported with simple training to build confidence and consistency in messaging. Ultimately, clear expectations and shared feedback help ensure that everyone from families, staff and students can stay on the same page.

When parental engagement is strategic and consistent, everyone can benefit from it, students thrive, families feel included, and schools become stronger learning communities.
